Worried about getting into a class? Have no fear! Dr. Upshaw has a guide below that shows your three options in this situation. But first, please take a look at this graphic, which details all the info that you can get by searching the Online Schedule of Classes on nsula.edu/registrar. You will need this info if you ask to get into a course.

If you are visiting this page, it is likely because a class that you may want into is full or you need a permit. If you need a permit, please go straight to "Option 2" below. Students often request permits when a class is full or when the computer system is not detecting that they have the pre-reqs for a course. This page is primarily made for students needing into a class that is full, but if you need a permit for other reasons, Option #2 below is still relevant to you.

You will need to understand the graphic in order to complete some of the options below.

Option 1: Monitor the class enrollment for a few days and register for it as soon as you see a seat open up. The graphic shows how to see how many seats are remaining. The remaining seats figure is updated instantly as people drop and add the course.

Option 2: Ask for a permit into the class. Here's how:

Email the instructor who is teaching each course and ask for a permit into the course. The person teaching the course is listed on the Online Schedule of Classes (see the graphic to see where the instructor's name and email address are located.)

While you don't have to, I recommend using the following template when emailing and asking for a permit into a course. All the info below is available on the Online Schedule of Classes and the example image shows where. Whether you use the template or not, including all the info below will help get your permit processed more quickly.

Example/Template:

"Dear (instructor name),

My name is (your name), and I am requesting a permit into your class, (course name an section). I need the permit because (give your reason..the class is full, only that section fits your work schedule, etc.). While I know that you may or may not be able to give the permit, please find all the course details below that you would need to issue permit:

Name: Mickey Mouse
Student ID number: 123456789
Course and Section: CIS 2000-02i (this is just an example)
Course Registration Number: 11334 (this is just an example)
Semester: Fall 2018 (This is just an example. Put down the semester that the class is offered.)

Thank you,

(Your Name)"

IMPORTANT!! If you get a permit, you **must** register for the course by manually typing in the CRN (Course Registration Number) into the "add" box during registration. Adding a course through the "search" function will not work with a permit. Also, permits usually take 24 to 48 hours to become active, but it does not hurt to start checking an hour or two after you hear back from the instructor. If the permit is approved but you cannot register after a 48 hour window, please ask the instructor to double-check that it was issued.

Option 3: Do not try this unless the first two options fail. You could contact the department head of the course area and ask if any arrangements can be made to get you into a course. Sometimes, the department head may be considering opening a new section of a course. However, other times, there may be nothing that a department head can do. Students who are graduating may be given priority. Unless a new section is being opened, department heads may not be able to help. Department heads usually do not override an instructor's decision unless there are extinuating circumstances.
